There are instances when internal versions of components are created for in-house use only and are never intended for shipping. Over time, to streamline the system, it may become necessary to eliminate these versions and transfer associated issues to a different version. Jira facilitates this process at the version level, while the Component Versions add-on extends this capability to the component version level.
How to Merge Component Versions
To initiate the merge of one component version with another:
Select the 'Merge' button from the action menu corresponding to the component version you wish to merge.
This action will launch the "Merge Dialog," where you can select the target version for the merge
Only versions that are compatible with that particular component will be displayed.
If you have version fields that are not searchable as above, Software Configuration Management Toolkit will ignore these fields during the merge. Thus, if the version that you are about to merge is in these fields, changes won’t be applied for them.
After clicking the 'Save' button, information about the merge process will appear at the bottom-left of the page. You might see three different information:
If merge process is INPROGRESS;
If merge process is DONE successfully;
If merge process is DONE with some PROBLEMS
Post Merge Outcomes
Upon selecting the target version and clicking on "Merge":
All issues linked to the original version, whether tagged in the 'fix version', 'affects version' or any version fields, will be reassigned to the new version.
The component version you selected to merge will be deleted.
The original Jira version will not be deleted.
