Translating Attributes to Other Locales
Attribute Translations
Overview
WorklogPRO Cloud now supports multiple languages for worklog attributes, allowing you to provide translations for attribute names, descriptions, and values. This ensures that users see attribute information in their preferred language, making the application more accessible to international teams and helps you to meet legal requireements in some countries.
Supported Languages
The following languages are currently supported:
English (en) - Default language
German (de - Deutsch)
Spanish (es - Español)
French (fr - Français)
Italian (it - Italiano)
Turkish (tr - Türkçe)
Key Features
Automatic Language Detection
Attributes are automatically displayed in the user's preferred language based on their Jira language settings
If a translation is not available for the user's language, the system falls back to English
If no English translation is provided, the original attribute name and description are used
Translation Scope
Translations can be provided for:
Attribute Type Names: The name of the attribute (e.g., "Department", "Cost Center", "Project Phase", “Work Type”, “Billable”)
Attribute Type Descriptions: The description or help text for the attribute
Attribute Value Names: The names of individual values for single-select attributes
Attribute Value Descriptions: The descriptions for individual values for single-select attributes.
Application-Wide Support
Translated attributes appear throughout the application:
Worklog entry forms
Worklog tables and grids
Reports and charts
Pivot tables
Calendar views
Filters and search
Managing Attribute Type Translations
Accessing the Translation Dialog
Navigate to WorklogPRO Settings → Attributes
In the Attribute Types table, locate the attribute you want to translate
Click the language icon (🌐) in the Actions column for that attribute
The "Edit translations" dialog will open
Adding Translations for an Attribute Type
The dialog displays tabs for each supported language at the top
Click on the tab for the language you want to translate
For each language, you can provide:
Name: The translated name of the attribute (required if providing any translation for that language)
Description: The translated description or help text (optional)
Field Requirements:
Name:
Minimum length: 2 characters
Maximum length: 250 characters
Required for English; optional for other languages
Description:
Maximum length: 500 characters
Optional for all languages
Switch between language tabs to add translations for multiple languages
Click Save to store your translations
Important Notes:
English is the base language: The original attribute name and description you entered when creating the attribute are automatically associated with English
Partial translations are allowed: You can provide translations for only some languages; untranslated languages will fall back to English
Empty translations: If you don't provide a name for a specific language, users with that language preference will see the English version
Managing Attribute Value Translations
For attributes of type Single Select, you can also translate the individual values (options) that users can choose from.
Accessing the Value Translation Dialog
Navigate to WorklogPRO Settings → Attributes
Click on an attribute of type "Single Select" to view its values
In the Attribute Values table, locate the value you want to translate
Click the language icon (🌐) in the Actions column for that value
The "Edit translations" dialog will open
Adding Translations for an Attribute Value
The process is the same as for attribute types:
Click on the language tab you want to translate
Enter the translated Name for the value (e.g., if the English value is "High Priority", you might enter "Haute Priorité" for French)
Optionally, enter a translated Description
Switch between tabs to add translations for multiple languages
Click Save to store your translations
Field Requirements:
Name: Maximum length of 250 characters (no minimum for values)
Description: Maximum length of 500 characters
Both fields are optional for all non-English languages
Best Practices
Planning Your Translations
Start with English: Ensure your English attribute names and descriptions are clear and comprehensive, as they serve as the fallback
Consider your user base: Translate into the languages that your team members actually use
Maintain consistency: Use consistent terminology across all attributes in the same language
Keep names concise: Attribute names appear in tables and forms, so keep them short and clear
Provide descriptions: Use the description field to provide context and clarify the attribute's purpose
Translate values together: If you translate an attribute type, also translate all its values for a consistent user experience
Review translations: Have native speakers review translations to ensure accuracy and natural phrasing
Updating Translations
You can edit translations at any time by clicking the language icon again
Changes take effect immediately for all users
If you change the English name/description of an attribute, the English translation will remain as previously entered unless you also update it in the translation dialog
How Users Experience Translations
Language Selection
Users' language preferences are automatically detected from their Jira language settings. Users can change their language in Jira under:
Jira Profile → Personal Settings → Language
Display Behavior
When a user views WorklogPRO:
If translation exists: The attribute/value is displayed in the user's preferred language
If translation missing: The system falls back to the English translation
If English translation missing: The original attribute name/description is displayed
Example Scenario
Consider an attribute named "Department" with values "Engineering", "Sales", and "Marketing":
A German user sees: "Abteilung" with values "Technik", "Vertrieb", "Marketing" (if translations are provided)
A French user sees: "Département" with values "Ingénierie", "Ventes", "Marketing" (if translations are provided)
An English user always sees: "Department" with values "Engineering", "Sales", "Marketing"
A Portuguese user (unsupported language) sees: The English version (fallback behavior)
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I remove a translation once added? A: Yes, simply open the translation dialog, clear the fields for that language, and save. The system will revert to showing the English version for users of that language.
Q: Do I need to translate all attributes? A: No, translations are optional. You can translate only the attributes that are important for your multilingual users.
Q: What happens if I change the original attribute name? A: The original name is used as the English default. If you've already created translations, they remain unchanged. You may want to update the English translation in the translation dialog to match.
Q: Are attribute translations included in exports? A: When you export worklog data, attributes are displayed in the language of the user performing the export.
Q: Can I add support for additional languages? A: The current version supports six languages. Support for additional languages would require a system update. Please contact support if you need additional languages.
